Centering equity and lived expertise in the development of transportation, waste, buildings, energy, and public health strategies.

In 2019, the City of Medford launched a process to create a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan -- a roadmap for building a more resilient and low-carbon city. At the heart of this plan was the understanding that addressing climate change requires unpacking the inequities at the root of the climate crisis, and building inclusive processes and more equitable outcomes so that all community members have the resources to thrive.
As part of the plan's development, the project team worked with the Medford Office of Planning, Development, and Sustainability to:
-
Host a multilingual community dinner centered on storytelling to share, reflect, and envision what is required to build community resilience in Medford;
-
Facilitate a series of working groups with residents and City staff to develop and refine strategies across four focus areas;
-
Provide an equity training and workshop for the working groups, City staff, and residents to build shared understanding and to ensure the climate strategies advance equity in Medford;
-
Draw on the expertise of a BIPOC-specific working group to advise on the plan's development, and develop ongoing processes that center equity and the lived experiences of low-income and BIPOC residents in the implementation of the plan.
Through the insight and commitment of Medford residents, the Medford Climate Action and Adaptation Plan works towards a more affordable, accessible, just, resilient, and healthy, low-carbon city for Medford residents today and for generations to come.
